I am not trained or schooled in art. My degree is in Laboratory Science and that is where I learned about chemical reactions and how pH affects color. That knowledge led to this amazing art form.
Each piece starts with paper, heat and an acid source. Pressing and boiling extracts the pigments from the plant while adding an acid draws out, and sometimes changes, the colors.
I might choose purple cabbage, lemons, blueberries, alum or I might throw in a rusty nail or two. Watercolors and pastels enhance the colors.
As a child my grandmother use to take us for walks in the woods to gather foliage to arrange or paint. She was always coming up with ideas to help us think outside the box. Working in a flower shop while earning my degree only deepened my love of plants. Needless to say, the mountains of western North Carolina are my happy place.
